Selling an engagement ring is often an emotional decision as well as a financial one. Knowing how rings are valued before you sell helps you set realistic expectations and get a fair offer.
How a buyer values an engagement ring
A ring is valued in two parts: the diamond or gemstones, and the metal of the band and setting.
- The diamond is assessed on the four Cs: carat weight, colour, clarity and cut. A grading certificate from a recognised laboratory such as GIA or EGL makes this faster and more accurate.
- The metal is valued on its purity and weight, for example 18ct gold or platinum. See our live gold price per gram for today’s market value.
Why resale value is lower than the purchase price
The price you paid at a jeweller included design, workmanship, the retailer’s costs and VAT. A buyer of second-hand jewellery pays for what the ring is worth on the resale market: the value of the diamond and the metal. That is why resale offers are usually well below the original retail price. Designer and branded pieces can be an exception, and are assessed individually. Lab-grown diamonds usually have a much lower resale value than natural diamonds, which is why we test every stone to confirm its origin.
What to bring
- A valid South African ID or passport and a proof of address. The Second-Hand Goods Act requires us to record your identity and address for every sale.
- Any diamond grading certificate (for example GIA or EGL).
- The original box, receipt or valuation certificate, if you have them.
Should you have the stone removed first?
No. Bring the ring as it is. We can assess the diamond in its setting and value the metal at the same time, and removing a stone yourself can damage it.
Tips for a fair offer
- Ask for the diamond and the metal to be valued separately so you can see how the offer is made up.
- Make sure testing and weighing happen in front of you.
- Ask whether any commission or evaluation fees will be deducted. Zeek Gold does not deduct any.
- Take your time. You are never obliged to sell on the day.

Frequently asked questions
How is an engagement ring valued when I sell it?
The diamond is valued on carat, colour, clarity and cut, and the band on its metal purity and weight. A grading certificate such as GIA or EGL helps.
Why is the resale offer lower than what I paid?
The retail price included design, workmanship, the retailer’s costs and VAT. Resale offers are based on the value of the diamond and metal, so they are usually well below retail.
Should I remove the diamond before selling?
No. Bring the ring as it is. The diamond can be assessed in its setting, and removing it yourself can damage it.
